What Covers Reveals, Too

Collaborative work with Narges Porsandekhial

Created for FLESH: Embodying Praxis, the 45th annual University of British Columbia AHVA Graduate Symposium, 2022.

For artists, our presence is found in our work. This handmade quilt is an embodiment of the patch-work construction of personal self expressed in physical labour. The quilt covers our bodies while we are present, and acts as a placeholder for the body when we are not.

Using earth and flesh tones on muslin, we worked intuitively with our bodies to produce marks which allow our presence and process to be apparent in the work. When coated in beeswax, the muslin holds its shape and reveals all its subtle wrinkles and imperfections while giving off a lively luminescence very similar to the textural qualities of flesh. Each square that makes up the quilt is 4”x4” and have been stitched together by hand.
